Bamforth’s Health Benefits of Beer

Craftbeer.com recently posted an article by Charlie Bamforth, Professor of Malting & Brewing Sciences at the University of California Davis, regarding the health benefits of beer. There is a growing body of research that proves that drinking beer in moderation has health benefits mostly due to the alcohol in the beer. Bamforth points out, however, that beer in moderation is more healthy than wine. The article ends with an extensive list of what is known about beer and health such as positively affecting the balance of good versus bad cholesterol, reducing risk of diabetes, fewer gallstones, reduced risk of dementia in the elderly, and more. The key is moderation, which is no one or two regular strength beers (about 5% abv) per day.
